The short version

In short: Service Journal has no accounts and no tracking. Your records stay on your phone. Something leaves your phone only when you tap Read with AI, when you buy or use Service Journal Plus through Apple, or when you save a backup file yourself. Saving a manual from a link downloads it straight from that website; nothing is sent to us.

What stays on your phone

Your records

Your machines, service history, tasks, intervals, meter readings, notes and photos are stored in the app on your iPhone. They are not sent to us, and there is no cloud copy kept by us.

The app also keeps a short technical record of its own recent activity on your phone, for troubleshooting. It is never sent anywhere.

Manuals you import or save stay on your phone and in your backups. When you save a manual from a link, your iPhone downloads it directly from that website, as Safari would; we don't receive it. The Search button for a manual opens a DuckDuckGo search of the maker's website in Safari's in-app view; what you type there goes to DuckDuckGo and that website, not to us.

Places

The places you add (for example "Barn" or "Shop") are names you type. The app does not use your phone's location.

Camera and photos

Reminders

Reminders are notifications your iPhone schedules for itself. No server sends them, and you can turn them off in the app or in iOS Settings.

Backups

A backup is a .zip file the app makes when you ask, holding your records and photos. You choose where it goes (Files, iCloud Drive, a computer). We never receive it. Restoring reads a backup file you pick.

Deleting your data

Deleting the app deletes the records it keeps on your phone. Backup files you saved and photos saved to your Photos library stay where you put them. Apple keeps the free-scan count described above.

Read with AI

Reading a label on your phone

When you scan a label, the text is read on your iPhone itself. Nothing is sent anywhere for this.

When you tap Read with AI

If the phone couldn't read everything, you can tap Read with AI. Only then:

Nothing is sent if you don't tap Read with AI.

Other things that leave your phone

How our server knows a request is from the real app

To stop misuse of the AI service, our server checks each Read with AI request with Apple's services:

App Attest (Apple). The app proves to our server that it's a genuine copy.

Free AI scans

Free AI scans (Apple's DeviceCheck). Each iPhone gets 3 free AI scans. The count is kept by Apple, not by us: Apple stores two yes/no values for this app on your device (enough to count 0 to 3), plus the month they were last changed. Because Apple keeps it, the count stays the same if you delete and reinstall the app. It contains nothing about who you are.

Subscription checks

When a Plus subscriber taps Read with AI, the app sends Apple's signed record of the subscription so our server can confirm it. Your monthly scan count shown in the app is kept on your phone.

Refund notices

Apple tells our server when a subscription is refunded or revoked.

What our server keeps

Who we are and who else is involved

Service Journal is an equipment maintenance log for iPhone, made by Dunn Hunny ("we"). Questions about this policy: support@servicejournalai.com.

OpenAI processes the photo under its API data-use policies. See OpenAI: your data on the API platform and OpenAI's policies.

Purchases, payment, renewals and cancellations are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details, your name or your Apple ID.

Our server runs on Cloudflare, which receives requests to it the way any web host does.

What we never collect

No accounts, names, email addresses or phone numbers. No location. No contacts. No analytics, no advertising, no tracking across apps or websites, and no third-party analytics or advertising code in the app. We don't sell or share personal information, because we don't have any.

No account

You don't sign up or sign in. We don't ask for your name, email address or phone number, and we don't have them.

Children

Service Journal is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version is posted on this page with a new effective date, and significant changes are mentioned in the app's update notes.
